Can ChatGPT post to social media?

Not in a plain chat: ChatGPT writes the post, but it has no access to your accounts. To publish, add a tool that does. With Octopost added as a custom MCP server, ChatGPT can post to X, schedule posts and queue them for your approval. X, Bluesky and Mastodon are live today.

What ChatGPT needs before it can publish

Posting takes a signed-in connection to the network. ChatGPT gets that from an MCP server: a service you add under Plugins that gives it tools, in this case tools for creating and scheduling posts.

OpenAI's docs say ChatGPT supports both read and write tools from a custom server, and that write actions need your confirmation by default. So you see each post before ChatGPT sends it, unless you tell it to remember your answer for that tool during the conversation.

Your X sign-in stays with Octopost. You connect X once in the Octopost dashboard, then sign in to Octopost from ChatGPT. You don't need an X developer account.

Add Octopost to ChatGPT

  1. Create an Octopost account and connect your X account on the accounts page.
  2. In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins, click the plus button and choose Add custom MCP server.
  3. Name it Octopost, paste the URL below, choose OAuth, accept the warning and create it.
  4. Sign in to Octopost in the window that opens and click Allow.
  5. In a chat, type @, pick Octopost and ask it to list your accounts.

Then ask ChatGPT

@Octopost Which accounts do I have connected?

@Octopost Post this to X now: "The new export button is live."

@Octopost Turn this article into three posts and hold them for my approval.

Full steps are on the ChatGPT setup page. To read drafts by email before they go out, see approving agent posts.

Limits worth knowing

  • OpenAI says to add custom servers in ChatGPT on the web, and that workspace permissions apply. Whether you can add one depends on your plan, and on Business or Enterprise an admin may need to allow it.
  • We have run this sign-in end to end from claude.ai but not yet from a ChatGPT account. ChatGPT uses the same standard sign-in. If yours stalls, tell us through the contact page.
  • Each post on X must fit 280 characters, with links counted as 23. Longer text goes out as a thread of up to 25 posts.
  • Octopost plans cap X posts each month: Basic allows 500, or about 38 with links. X charges per post and costs more for a post with a link.
  • Octopost posts your own posts and threads. It has no tools for replying to other people, sending direct messages, following or liking.
  • Octopost does not write the post. ChatGPT writes it; Octopost checks the limits and publishes it.

Questions

Can ChatGPT post to X (Twitter)?

Yes, with a connected tool. Add Octopost as a custom MCP server, connect your X account, and ChatGPT can publish, thread, schedule and queue posts on X.

Can ChatGPT post to Instagram, Facebook or TikTok?

Not through Octopost. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Discord, Slack and Telegram are not supported.

Can ChatGPT post to LinkedIn or Bluesky?

Bluesky is live in Octopost. LinkedIn is in testing, so a post there may fail, and it covers personal profiles only.

Can ChatGPT schedule social media posts?

Yes, for X. Give it a date, a time and your time zone. Octopost holds the post and publishes it at that time, so the chat does not need to stay open.

Will ChatGPT publish something I have not seen?

OpenAI says write actions need confirmation by default. For a firmer rule, turn on "Require approval for every post" in Octopost Settings. Every post from ChatGPT then waits for a person to approve it from an email or the dashboard.
