Is it against X's rules to post with an AI agent?

X's Developer Policy doesn't mention AI, so nothing in it bans a post because an agent wrote it. It limits the behavior: no spam or platform manipulation, no automated replies or direct messages without consent, no identical posts across accounts, and bot accounts must say they are bots.

What X's policy says about automated posting

The rules below come from the X Developer Policy, which covers services built on the X API. It says services that post, follow or send direct messages must follow X's Automation Rules, so read those as well. X can change either page at any time, and X decides how they apply to your account.

This page is a summary, not legal advice. It tells you what to check before you let an agent post, and which parts Octopost can help with.

X's policyWhat it means for your agent
"The use of the X API and developer products to create spam, or engage in any form of platform manipulation, is prohibited."Keep volume reasonable and post things you would stand behind.
"Always get explicit consent before sending people automated replies or Direct Messages."Don't point an agent at strangers' posts or inboxes.
"Never post identical or substantially similar content across multiple accounts."If your agent runs several accounts, each one needs its own content.
"Never perform bulk, aggressive, or spammy actions, including bulk following."Avoid mass actions and sudden bursts.
"If you're operating an API-based bot account you must clearly indicate what the account is and who is responsible for it."If the account runs as a bot, say so. X suggests a statement in the profile bio.

Set up an agent that stays inside those limits

Octopost is a way to give an agent posting access with limits you set. Connect the MCP server, then keep a person in the loop and set a cap on the API keys page:

Connect the agent (Claude Code shown)

claude mcp add --transport http octopost https://octopost.ink/mcp

Ask it to hold what it writes

Draft three posts about this week's release.
Queue each one with needs_approval so I can review them.

What Octopost enforces once it's connected:

  • Approval. With "Require approval for every post" on in Settings, everything an agent sends waits for a person. The agent can't approve its own posts.
  • A daily post limit per API key or connected app, set on the API keys page.
  • A duplicate check. The same text to the same network within 7 days is refused unless the agent passes allow_duplicate.
  • Blocked terms. A post containing one of your blocked terms is held for approval.
  • No outreach tools. Octopost has no tools for direct messages, following or liking, or for replying to other people's posts. A thread's replies go under your own post.

More in the approval guide and the MCP docs.

Limits worth knowing

  • These settings don’t make an account compliant. You are still responsible for what your agent posts and how your account behaves.
  • Octopost does not label your X account as automated. Set that up on X yourself if the account needs it.
  • The duplicate check compares text exactly, ignoring case and spacing. A lightly reworded copy can still count as substantially similar under X’s policy.
  • X is the live network in Octopost. The rules above are X’s; other networks have their own.

Questions

Can X suspend my account for posting with AI?

The Developer Policy says X may suspend or revoke API access for breaking its policies, and it does not name AI, so the behavior is what it addresses. For penalties on an account, read X’s Automation Rules and its platform manipulation rules.

Do I have to disclose that AI wrote a post on X?

The Developer Policy does not say so. It does require API-based bot accounts to say what the account is and who is responsible for it, and it says not to mislead people about whether an account is a bot.

Is scheduling posts through an API allowed on X?

The Developer Policy has no separate rule for scheduling. It requires services that post through the API to follow its rules and the Automation Rules, and a scheduled post goes through the same API.

Can I have an AI agent reply to people on X?

X requires explicit consent before automated replies or direct messages. Octopost has no tool for replying to other people’s posts.

Can I post the same thing on two X accounts?

X’s policy says never to post identical or substantially similar content across multiple accounts.
